Tokyo Inflation Surges Past BOJ Target
Tokyo's inflation rate has accelerated to levels well above the Bank of Japan's target. According to data released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Tokyo's key inflation gauge rose sharply in September. The consumer price index excluding fresh food increased 2.7% from a year earlier, surpassing the median economist forecast of 2.3%. This marks the first time since January that the gauge has touched 2% or higher.
The acceleration of inflation comes as temporary government measures fade. Despite this, the Bank of Japan's stance on continuing to raise the benchmark rate remains unchanged. The authorities have accelerated the pace of policy normalization in response to rising inflation.
