Tokyo Stock Exchange Prepares for Thursday Reopening Amid Global Market Volatility
The Tokyo Stock Exchange was closed from Monday to Wednesday for Japan's first five-day Silver Week in 11 years. The closure coincided with a volatile period globally, where markets reacted to US-Iran talks at the United Nations and Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr's comments on further tightening.
The Nikkei 225's official reference level remains Friday's close of 65,018.95, after it rose 882.70 points or 1.38% from Thursday's close of 64,136.25. This was largely due to the Bank of Japan's decision to raise its policy rate from 1.0% to 1.25%, the highest level in 31 years.
The yen weakened to around 157 per dollar after the decision, supporting exporters. However, a weaker yen and higher global yields may weigh on semiconductor and AI-related names like Advantest, Tokyo Electron, and SoftBank Group that carry significant weight in the Nikkei 225.
