Tokyo stocks closed with mixed results on Tuesday, as declines in major technology shares weighed on the Nikkei index, while gains in bank stocks provided some support. The Nikkei Stock Average dropped 1,253.40 points, or 1.82 percent, to 67,777.52, while the broader Topix index rose 5.86 points, or 0.14 percent, to 4,110.67.
The Japanese markets reopened after a public holiday on Monday. Gains were seen in marine transportation and mining sectors, while nonferrous metals and electric appliances declined.
The U.S. dollar weakened slightly against the yen, trading in the lower 158 yen range. Traders speculated that the Bank of Japan might raise interest rates faster than the U.S. Federal Reserve. The dollar was quoted at 158.21-22 yen in Tokyo, down from 158.68-69 yen in London the previous day.
The Nikkei index fell due to overnight losses in U.S. tech shares, driven by concerns over increased competition in artificial intelligence. The Topix index recovered from earlier losses, with investors shifting focus to banking and other sectors.
