Trade Tensions Spark USD/CAD Indecision Amid Canada-US Tariff Escalation
A sense of indecision has taken hold in the USD/CAD market, driven by ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the US.
The White House recently announced import restrictions on certain Canadian products, including dairy products, motorcycles, and alcoholic beverages, starting later this month. In response to these measures, Canada introduced retaliatory tariffs on September 8, affecting around $20 billion worth of U.S. products.
This trade dispute may not be favorable for the Canadian dollar, as it has a strong dependence on exports to the US market, with over 70% of total exports directed towards the US.
The behavior of bond markets in both countries is also being closely watched, with U.S. 10-year Treasury yields remaining above the 4.8% area and Canadian 10-year government bond yields approaching the 3.85% area.
