Trade War Escalation: Canada Hits Back at US Tariffs with $20 Billion Retaliation
A trade war between the US and Canada could have significant consequences for Ohio's economy. Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion worth of American goods, matching the Trump administration's recent imposition of 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian-made products.
The move is in response to complaints from the US that Canada discriminates against American cars, dairy, and alcohol. The tariffs include plywood products, textiles, cosmetics, seeds, tools, machinery, electronics, furniture, and sporting goods.
Ohio's economy could take a hit as it is one of the largest exporters to Canada, with $17.5 billion in goods sent across the border in 2025 - roughly a third of the state's total exports.
Agriculture and international trade economist Ian Sheldon notes that the automotive industry will be particularly affected by the tariffs, as raw materials and components often cross North American borders several times as a vehicle is assembled.
