Traders Flood Options Market with Bets Against Pound Ahead of UK Budget
As the UK government prepares to unveil its first budget on October 28, traders are increasing their bets against the pound. Data from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation shows that options calling for sterling to drop against the dollar now account for two-thirds of market volumes this month. Against the euro, it's even more pronounced, with three-quarters of market volumes favoring a weaker pound.
This shift in sentiment suggests that investors are anticipating fiscal measures from the new government that could erode the UK's economic stability and put downward pressure on the currency.
It remains to be seen what specific policies or announcements will drive this trend, but for now, traders seem to be positioning themselves for a potential decline in sterling's value.
