Treasury Yield Jumps to 19-Year High Amid Expectations of Another Rate Hike
The US Treasury yield surged to its highest level in nearly two decades on Wednesday, driven by strong expectations of another interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve.
The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note rose more than 3% to 5.106%, its highest since July 2007, from an opening level of 4.955%. This increase was fueled by hawkish comments from several Federal Reserve officials, including Neel Kashkari and Alberto Musalem, who emphasized the need for further interest rate hikes to curb inflation.
The strong US economic data released on Wednesday also contributed to the yield's surge, with growth in the manufacturing sector jumping to 57.0 points in September, its highest level in 52 months, and services sector growth accelerating to 58.7 points, its highest level in 59 months.
