Trump Admin's Yen Intervention Linked to Dollar Stability Concerns

Professor Harold James of Princeton University has compared the current role of the Japanese yen to the British pound in the 1960s, when US officials viewed it as a form of external protection for the dollar. According to James, the Trump administration's intervention in support of the yen may be linked to concerns over the stability of the dollar and US public debt. In an article for the Korea Herald, James drew attention to a Reuters photo from late July showing US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent holding a list that included an item on purchasing between $5 billion and $10 billion worth of yen.

Bessent later stated that the Trump administration was prepared to take all necessary measures to support the Japanese currency. Publicly, he explained the intervention by citing the yen's undervaluation and the desire to prevent a new round of currency wars. However, James believes that historical experience shows that currency interventions can affect the market in the short term but do not alter fundamental economic factors.

In his view, Japan would need higher interest rates and possibly fiscal tightening for a lasting effect on the yen's value. At the same time, according to this assessment, the United States would have to cut rates and issue less debt. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is said to consider the current level of interest rates sufficiently high.
