Trump Backs Warsh as Fed Rate Debate Heats Up Ahead of FOMC Decision
President Donald Trump has expressed his support for Kevin Warsh to take over as Federal Reserve Chairman, criticizing current Fed board members for blocking lower interest rates. Trump praised Warsh as 'fantastic', suggesting that he wants to do the right thing, unlike some other Fed officials who have 'bad intentions'. This comes ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) latest policy decision, with markets pricing in a strong chance of keeping rates unchanged at 3.5% to 3.75%. The CME FedWatch tool still shows a one-in-three chance of a quarter-point increase.
Fed officials, including Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, have signaled ongoing caution on rate cuts due to persistently high inflation. Logan has been the clearest advocate of tighter policy in recent days, suggesting that benchmark rates should be 'modestly higher'. The current benchmark overnight borrowing rate is targeted at 3.5% to 3.75%, which is roughly in line with the Bank of England but above other major central banks.
Trump's comments also highlight a widening split between the White House's push for easier policy and central bank officials' concerns about inflation. The Fed's decision looms as Trump presses for cuts, arguing that cheaper borrowing could lift economic growth higher. However, with inflation remaining high, it remains to be seen whether the FOMC will accommodate Trump's wishes.
