Trump Cites Weak Yen as Hurdle for US Trade in Meeting with Takaichi
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with US President Donald Trump in New York on Tuesday, and according to Takaichi, Trump expressed concern about the strong US trade due to the weak yen. The prime minister acknowledged that the undervaluation of the yen is a problem, but emphasized that Japan's stance remains unchanged: achieving a strong economy and fiscal sustainability simultaneously through responsible public finances.
Takaichi stated that monetary and fiscal issues were not discussed during the meeting. This comes as Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama earlier mentioned that Trump had expressed concern over the yen's depreciation at the meeting with Takaichi.
