President Donald Trump visited Michigan on Monday to defend his sweeping tariffs and argue that they have revived the auto industry and American manufacturing. He toured a General Motors facility in Milford, where he saw various GM models, including the latest versions of the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Sierra, and Chevrolet Silverado. The president claimed that the production of these vehicles has been boosted by tariffs.

Trump also watched 'America First' drag races at the facility, which involved muscle cars and luxury vehicles like the Corvette Z06, Cadillac Escalade V, and EV Hummer. He signed the hood of a white Corvette made specifically for America's 250th birthday during the tour.

The president's visit comes as some businesses in Michigan contend that the tariffs have actually hurt the state's economy. Automakers have long said that tariffs increase the cost of doing business, leading to higher prices for consumers. The US and Canada have also squabbled over a new border bridge, with Trump imposing tariffs on Canadian products including cars.

Michigan's economy relies heavily on Canada, making the latest round of tariffs a concern for the state. Some advocacy groups estimate that tariffs have cost Michigan businesses billions of dollars since last spring. The president's approval ratings have sagged, and his handling of the economy could be a liability for Republicans trying to hold control of Congress in the November elections.
