Trump Delays Tariffs on Canada Amid Ongoing Trade Talks
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement on Tuesday night regarding President Donald Trump's decision to postpone 50% tariffs on Canada. The tariffs were originally set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. on August 19th and would have affected billions of dollars' worth of Canadian imports, including wine, hockey sticks, and cement.
Carey stated that both countries have made significant progress toward an agreement but still had work to do. The U.S. had agreed to postpone the implementation of the tariffs until August 21st, pending the finalization of documents.
This decision comes after Trump announced his intention to delay the tariffs on Tuesday night, saying he had paused them for a three-day period based on the fact that Canada and the U.S. have a deal subject to document finalization. The original announcement of the tariffs was made by the White House in July, citing the need to level the playing field for American exports.
Carey also emphasized his commitment to building a stronger and more competitive Canadian economy, stating that Canada has engaged in intensive discussions with the U.S. to address outstanding trade issues and deliver greater certainty and real benefits for Canadian businesses, workers, farmers, and families.
