Trump Demands Lowest Interest Rates in the World
President Donald Trump has once again weighed in on interest rates, stating that the US should have the lowest rates in the world. Speaking at the Irish Open golf tournament over the weekend, Trump said he believes the US should be paying lower interest rates than any other country.
This comes as the Federal Reserve prepares to meet and potentially raise interest rates. The current target range for the federal funds rate is 3.5% to 3.75%, but some Fed policymakers have expressed concerns that raising rates could exacerbate inflation, which has been rising due in part to Trump's import tax increases and surging energy prices tied to the Iran war.
Trump's comments come just days before the Federal Reserve's next policy meeting, and his remarks may be seen as an attempt to influence the Fed's decision. The president has long been a critic of former Fed Chair Jay Powell, but he has been more supportive of current Fed leadership since his own pick for chair, Kevin Warsh, took charge earlier this year.
