Trump Demands Record-Low Interest Rates Amid Trade Disputes
US President Donald Trump has renewed his call for the Federal Reserve to slash interest rates in the US, arguing that the country's creditworthiness warrants historically low borrowing costs. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that 'Interest Rates in the United States should be 1%, or less,' and claimed that the country is 'BOOMING with new Investment!'
Trump also floated cutting trade ties with countries running surpluses against the US, suggesting that this would generate at least $1.5 trillion per year. He described the word 'Deficit' as a 'fancy word for LOSS,' and claimed that the US is 'carrying' almost every country in the world.
The president's comments come after Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh raised interest rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday, citing persistently high inflation. Trump has repeatedly clashed with the Fed over its rate policy, calling for borrowing costs as low as 1% or less.
