Trump Expresses Concern Over Weakening Yen to Japan's Takaichi
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama revealed on Friday that US President Donald Trump expressed concern over the yen's weakening during his meeting with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New York. The bilateral summit took place at the UN headquarters, where Takaichi briefed Trump about the yen's undervaluation being a problem in general terms.
Katayama stated that Trump was concerned about the weak yen and that coordinated intervention by Japanese and US authorities could be necessary to correct it. In late July, a joint effort between Japan and the US resulted in coordinated yen-buying intervention for the first time in nearly 28 years.
During Friday's press conference, Katayama indicated that he and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had not ruled out further coordinated intervention to stabilize the currency. This policy was reaffirmed during the summit between Trump and Takaichi.
