Trump Seeks Higher Inflation to Pay Off $40 Trillion Debt
President Trump has hinted that tolerating higher inflation could be a solution to rebalancing the US national debt, which stands at over $40 trillion. The White House has proposed various ideas to address the debt, including tariffs and visa revenues. However, economists have warned that higher inflation would erode the value of existing debt, allowing the government to refinance or repurchase it at cheaper rates.
According to Trump, 'certain levels of inflation will also pay off that debt very rapidly.' This approach may be unpopular with voters concerned about affordability. Nevertheless, many analysts have predicted above-target inflation as an outcome.
J.P. Morgan last year noted that policymakers could erode Fed independence by driving a stronger nominal growth environment characterized by higher inflation and lower real interest rates.
The Federal Reserve, however, is mandated to confine inflation to 2%. Any deviation from this target may be difficult to achieve without compromising monetary policy independence.
