Trump Seeks to Reshape Federal Reserve Leadership

US President Donald Trump's efforts to increase his influence over the Federal Reserve (Fed) continue despite court challenges and Senate resistance. Trump has backed Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh, who has resisted calls for interest rate cuts sought by the president. The president also criticized the Fed's Board of Governors, which he claims has hindered Warsh's plans.

Trump may have up to four opportunities to appoint or influence key officials at the central bank before his term ends. These opportunities arise from personnel decisions and legal battles surrounding several Fed members. One such case is that of Fed Governor Lisa Cook, who remains at the center of Trump's efforts to change the composition of the board.

Cook was appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2022 and has a term until 2038. The White House seeks her removal, citing an inaccurate statement on a mortgage document from years ago as sufficient cause. Cook described this effort as an attempt to gain influence over interest rate policy, indicating she will challenge any move to remove her.
