Trump Tariffs Put GOP Candidates at Risk Ahead of Midterm Elections
The Trump administration has announced new tariffs on imports from 60 trading partners over alleged forced labor violations. The duties, which went into effect at midnight on Friday, are in addition to a 50 percent tariff on certain Canadian goods imposed last week.
President Trump signaled that more tariffs are coming, threatening a 'substantial' tariff against the European Union for its $1 billion fine against Google. This move has put Republican candidates at risk heading into the midterms as Democrats seek to capitalize on the economic impact of Trump's trade agenda.
A recent Fox News poll found that only 33 percent of voters approve of Trump's handling of the economy, while a YouGov poll showed 47 percent of respondents believe the economy is in a poor state. The tariffs have been particularly burdensome for farmers and small businesses, with some warning they could lead to increased production costs and job losses.
However, not all Republicans are convinced that the tariffs will have a significant impact on voters. A Michigan-based strategist noted that tariffs have helped attract working-class voters who see them as beneficial to American industries.
