Trump Threatens Tariffs Over EU-Canada Association Plan
US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 'very serious tariffs' or halt trade with Europe if Canada becomes an associate member of the EU. This move, proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, would deepen ties between Canada and the EU.
Von der Leyen made this proposal at a European Parliament meeting, stating that she wanted to 'open the door' for Canada to become the first associate member of the EU.
However, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney clarified on Sunday that his government does not seek full membership in the EU, but rather a 'unique alliance' with the bloc.
A recent poll by Abacus Data found that 81% of Canadians support greater integration with the EU without joining the bloc, while 80% back deepening strategic cooperation in foreign policy, defense, and economy.
