Trump Threatens to End Trade with Nations Racking Up Billions in Deficits
President Donald Trump suggested that the United States could significantly reduce its massive trade deficits by simply cutting off trade with foreign partners. Speaking to reporters, Trump argued that other nations depend on the American economy far more than the U.S. depends on them.
He pointed out specific examples of countries that would be severely affected if the U.S. were to stop trading with them. For instance, Canada's $90 billion annual trade deficit with the U.S. would essentially disappear if they were no longer allowed to export goods to America.
Trump also mentioned Mexico and the European Union as countries that run significant trade deficits with the U.S., estimating that the EU has a $200 billion annual deficit.
The President tied trade balances directly to borrowing costs, stating that the U.S. deserves the lowest interest rates in the world because of its economic strength. He argued that lower rates abroad are unfair when foreign economies rely heavily on access to the American market.
