Trump Threatens Trade Ban Unless Fed Cuts Interest Rates
US President Donald Trump has threatened to stop trading with countries that have trade deficits unless the Federal Reserve (Fed) cuts interest rates. He made this statement on social media, saying that high interest rates put the US at a disadvantage and that he would not let it happen.
Trump's statement comes after strong employment numbers were released, which has increased the likelihood of a rate hike by the Fed. The non-agricultural job growth was 162,000 last month, the highest level in five months. According to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) FedWatch, there is about a 59.4% chance of a 0.25 percentage point increase in interest rates at the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting next month.
Experts have pointed out that Trump's threat may be a bluff and that it could lead to unnecessary confusion. Justin Wolfers, a professor of public policy and economics at the University of Michigan, said on social media that he is more worried about the future of the US economy now due to Trump's 'completely insane' posts.
Trump has been pressuring the Fed to cut interest rates for some time, even going so far as to suggest replacing Fed Chairman Jerome Powell. However, his latest statement takes it a step further by threatening to stop trading with countries that have trade deficits.
