Trump Threatens Trade Embargoes Unless Fed Cuts Rates
US President Donald Trump has threatened to halt trade with countries running a trade deficit with the United States unless the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates. This warning came after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported stronger-than-expected job creation in August, which triggered fears of a potential rate hike later this month among traders.
The Fed's next meeting is scheduled for September 15-16, 2026. Trump took to Truth Social to express his concerns about high interest rates putting the US at an unfair disadvantage. He emphasized that a strong country means 'a lower interest rate', and proposed that the Fed should be patriotic and act accordingly.
Trump's message also targeted the trade deficits with key partners, particularly Mexico and China. The US has deficits with over 90 nations, including its top trading partners. Trump believes that cutting off trade with these countries would benefit the country's economy and is willing to impose an embargo 'with one swipe of the pen'.
Experts fear a rate hike after the August jobs data showed employers added nearly three times as many jobs in August as economists had expected. The monthly report was mostly consistent with what Fed officials characterized as stable labor markets, while markets signalled the possibility of a rate hike for the central bank.
