Trump Threatens Trade Retaliation Over Interest Rate Stance
President Donald Trump is threatening to cut trade if the Federal Reserve doesn't lower interest rates following a strong jobs report. The Labor Department's August jobs report showed the economy added 162,000 jobs, exceeding expectations. This has increased the probability of a quarter-point hike from about 50% to more than 58%, according to CME FedWatch.
Trump took to social media, stating that lower interest rates are necessary because the U.S.A. is a stronger credit than it was just a short time ago. He argued that a strong country means lower interest rates and emphasized that the U.S. should have the lowest rate of any country in the world.
Trump also threatened to stop trading with countries that have a deficit with the U.S., citing the Supreme Court's ruling on tariffs as precedent. This move would be a significant escalation of Trump's trade policy, which has been a key aspect of his presidency.
