Trump Touts Tariffs as Boost to Auto Industry Amid Michigan Visit
President Donald Trump visited a General Motors facility in Milford, Michigan on Monday to tout his economic policies and the revival of the auto industry under his administration. Despite some businesses arguing that his sweeping tariffs have hurt the state, Trump argued that they have boosted production for companies like GM.
During the visit, Trump watched a trio of drag races involving muscle cars and luxury vehicles, which he praised as 'all America First power.' He also toured various GM models, including the latest versions of the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Sierra, and Chevrolet Silverado, saying that tariffs have been good for the company.
Trump's visit coincided with a new round of steep import levies taking effect on dozens of U.S. trading partners, including Canada, which has imposed its own levies in response to Trump's initial tariffs last year. Some advocacy groups say tariffs have cost Michigan businesses billions of dollars since last spring.
Trump's support for his economic policies and his handling of the economy have been questioned by some, with Jason Roe, a former executive director of the Michigan Republican Party, saying that tying himself too closely to top Republicans could be 'kryptonite to November voters.'
