President Donald Trump visited Michigan on Monday to defend his economic policies, particularly his tariffs on Canada and other countries. He claimed that his trade measures have helped General Motors (GM), a Detroit-based automaker, saying 'they've come a long way.'

Trump made the comments during a visit to GM's facility in Milford, where he watched Corvette, Cadillac, and Hummer vehicles compete in drag races. The president also sat in some of the vehicles on display.

GM has announced plans to expand production domestically in coming years, and Trump took credit for this development. However, his administration's tariffs have been a subject of controversy, with many businesses arguing that they hurt the state's economy, which relies heavily on trade with Canada.

The new round of tariffs is taking effect on dozens of U.S. trading partners, including Canada, where levies as high as 50% will be imposed on various products, including cars. Trump's visit to Michigan has been seen by some as an attempt to boost support for his policies and the Republican candidates running in the state's primaries.
