Trump Tries Again to Remove Fed Governor Over Mortgage Fraud Allegations

US Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook's lawyer has denied mortgage fraud allegations made against her by President Donald Trump, who is trying to remove her from her position. The accusations were first leveled a year ago by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte and amplified by Trump on social media.

Cook's attorney Abbe David Lowell said the claims rely 'on untried and unproven allegations of criminal wrongdoing' and that she has never committed mortgage fraud or any intentional wrongdoing. Lowell also pointed out that similar mistakes had been made by others in the administration, including Trump himself.

The White House took a fresh run at removing Cook earlier this month, telling her in a letter dated August 5 that the president was 'considering' removing her from her role due to alleged misstatements on mortgage agreements. However, Lowell's response stated that these acts do not show intentional wrongdoing or amount to a crime.

The case has been ongoing for over a year, with the US Supreme Court refusing to allow Cook's removal in a 5-4 ruling in June. This decision left open the question of whether there was any wrongdoing that could serve as cause for termination.
