Trump vs. The Fed: Who's Right on Interest Rates?
President Trump recently expressed his discontent over the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates by a quarter point to 3.75% to 4.00%. On Truth Social, he stated that the US has the 'Best Credit in the World' and urged for lower borrowing costs, advocating for a rate of 1%, or less.
However, this contradicts the views of experts who argue that lowering interest rates would only exacerbate inflation, currently at 3.4% year-over-year, according to the Consumer Price Index for August.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh emphasized the priority of tackling stubborn inflation in a press conference following the rate hike decision.
Despite Trump's claims that low interest rates would stimulate economic growth, many experts disagree, citing the potential for higher borrowing costs on credit cards, student loans, and car loans.
