Trump's 1% Rate Demand Sparks Alarm Among Analysts
U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated calls for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates to 1% have been met with skepticism by analysts, who warn that such a drastic cut would have far-reaching and potentially disastrous consequences.
The current policy rate is between 3.75% and 4%, and some figures close to the president say his demands should be seen as an attempt to deflect attention from issues like high consumer prices ahead of the midterm elections in November.
According to J. Benson Durham, founder of DASM investment research firm, a three-percentage-point cut by the Fed would 'seem cataclysmic', with Treasury rates climbing due to higher inflation expectations, countries like Germany potentially absorbing capital by offering slightly higher returns than the US, and the dollar plummeting.
Despite these concerns, Trump has continued to press for lower interest rates, arguing that the US deserves them as the world's largest economy with what he believes is the safest credit.
