Trump's Bank Claim Sparks Fact-Checking Frenzy
President Donald Trump recently claimed that US banks are not allowed to operate in Canada. However, this statement is factually incorrect according to experts.
According to a spokesperson for the Canadian Bankers Association, there are currently 15 US-based banks operating out of Canada, either as branches or subsidiaries. These banks have combined assets of approximately $124.6 billion Canadian dollars ($904 million USD), which is more than half of all assets held by foreign bank subsidiaries and branches.
The restrictions faced by these banks are due to Canadian banking regulations. Schedule III banks, which include most US-owned banks operating in Canada, cannot accept deposits below $150,000 (US$72,529). This makes it difficult for them to compete with larger Canadian-owned banks that have a strong presence in the market.
Despite these restrictions, many US banks continue to operate in Canada. Among the major players are J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, Citibank, Bank of America, Capital One, and Wells Fargo.
