The Bank of Canada has unveiled a new vertical $20 bill featuring King Charles III, marking the first time in over 70 years that a new monarch has appeared on this denomination. The note's design features floral emblems representing all 13 provinces and territories surrounding the king's portrait, along with a circular transparent window showcasing plants significant to Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

According to Governor Tiff Macklem, the note is 'striking, symbolic, and secure.' It includes several innovative security features, such as a purple stripe that contains moving images and pulsing elements when tilted. These features are designed to make authentication easier while making counterfeiting more difficult.

The new $20 bill will enter circulation in late February 2027, after the Bank works with financial institutions and cash-handling businesses to adapt necessary equipment. Secretary of State Wayne Long described the note as telling 'a distinctly Canadian story,' combining natural landscape, history, and international connections.
