Trump's Interest Rate Calls Spark Fears of Global Financial Chaos
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly called for a significant reduction in interest rates to 1%, but experts believe this would have catastrophic consequences, including massive dislocation in the global financial system.
In recent weeks, Trump's pressure on the Federal Reserve, led by Chairman Kevin Warsh, has intensified. Despite rising inflation and high mortgage rates near 7%, Trump argues that a 1% rate is justified due to the US being the world's largest economy with, he claims, the safest credit.
However, analysts disagree. J. Benson Durham, founder of DASM investment research firm, described a 3-percentage-point cut by the Fed as 'cataclysmic'. He warned that Treasury rates would climb due to higher inflation expectations, countries like Germany could attract capital with slightly higher interest rates, and the dollar would plummet.
Some close to Trump suggest his demands should be seen less as a prescription and more as an attempt to deflect from issues such as high consumer prices ahead of midterm elections in November. Others, like Grover Norquist, head of Americans for Tax Reform, argue that the president is simply expressing frustration with the pain caused by rising interest rates.
