Trump's Secret Calls to the Fed: A Cautionary Tale for Central Bank Independence
President Trump has made repeated calls to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh since May, according to The Wall Street Journal. The discussions have centered on the economic impact of the Iran war and artificial intelligence (AI), but rates have not been directly mentioned.
The calls come as bond investors question Warsh's independence after a 9-3 FOMC vote to hold interest rates steady in July. Three FOMC members dissented for an immediate hike, causing concerns about central-bank independence and its potential impact on crypto markets, DeFi, CEX liquidity, token performance, fundraising, and adoption.
This is not the first instance of a President exerting pressure on the Fed Chair. Former President Nixon similarly pressured Arthur Burns to loosen policy before his 1972 re-election bid. Tapes released decades later captured that pressure campaign.
