Trump's Tariff Policy May Cost Him Congress Control
President Donald Trump's support for tariffs in 2016 played a crucial role in his electoral victory, but it may now be costing him and his party dearly.
The tariffs have increased prices for households by an estimated $1,000 per year, according to the Yale Budget Lab. A poll conducted by the libertarian Cato Institute found that 74% of Americans believe the tariffs have increased their costs, including 66% of Republicans.
More than half of those polled, 53%, say the tariffs have weakened the economy, and 49% claim they've hurt their quality of life. A recent Politico/Public First poll found that 56% of Americans think the tariffs on Canada were 'wrong.'
In a stark turnaround, even some Republican candidates in states with significant trade ties to Canada are now opposing Trump's tariffs. Democratic Senate candidates have also promised to reverse them.
