Trump's Tariffs Deemed 'Insanity' by Economists
President Donald Trump's tariffs have been widely criticized by economists for failing to achieve their intended goals. According to conservative economist Desmond Lachman, a former deputy director of the International Monetary Fund's Policy Development and Review Department, Trump's policy is 'insanity'.
Lachman pointed out that despite previous tariffs not delivering on Trump's objectives, he has doubled down on them. The key goals of these tariffs were to eliminate the country's trade deficit and increase manufacturing employment.
However, Lachman noted that 18 months into his second term, Trump's tariff policy has failed to deliver on those objectives. In fact, the trade deficit remains virtually unchanged from the previous year's level of $900 billion, while manufacturing employment has declined by around 80,000 jobs.
Former Undersecretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs Robert Shapiro added that Trump's tariffs are hurting America's economy more broadly due to uncertainty in investments and trade agreements. 'It's about uncertainty,' he said. 'Every investment is based on an assessment of the likely future demand for whatever you're investing in... If you have a set of arrangements that give you some confidence about the price of your inputs coming from Mexico or Canada, it certainly helps reduce uncertainty about.
Progressive Policy Institute's Ed Gresser agreed with Lachman's position, but pointed out that a famous quote often attributed to Albert Einstein is actually a misquote. 'The general economic recommendation for changing trade balances is you have to raise the savings rate relative to the investment rate,' he said.
