Trump's Tariffs Give WTO New Lease on Life as Countries Build Alternative Trade Networks

The World Trade Organization (WTO) may have found a new lease on life thanks to President Trump's tariff policies, which are encouraging countries to build alternative trade networks.

This shift could lead to a more fragmented global economy, but it also presents an opportunity for the WTO to reinvent itself and play a more significant role in aggregating agreements negotiated by its member states.

Canada and the European Union have already established a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, and they are now considering deeper integration through various piece-by-piece arrangements. For instance, the European Commission has proposed an 'Alliance for the Future' that would cover areas such as technology, defense production, energy, critical minerals, batteries, artificial intelligence, and economic security.

This approach allows countries to negotiate agreements on a case-by-case basis, without having to settle all issues at once. By doing so, they can create 'laboratories for deeper cooperation' that can be aggregated by the WTO in the future.
