Trump's Tariffs Under Fire as Court Challenge Advances
President Donald Trump defended his tariffs at a Michigan event on Monday, claiming they have led to an auto-industry comeback. He argued that companies building in the US 'pay zero tariff,' shifting the burden to foreign producers.
However, economists dispute this claim, saying the average tariff burden is around $920 per US household by 2026. Researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Yale Budget Lab also found that Americans bear most of the cost, a conclusion the White House disputes.
The administration's latest round of tariffs faces a fresh court challenge over its authority under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The lawsuit was filed by Burlap & Barrel and Collective Horology on July 24, arguing that the forced-labor tariffs exceed the government's authority. Trump has repeatedly shifted his reasoning and legal footing for the tariffs during his second term.
