Trump's Trade War with Canada Enters New Chapter

President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada has been a long and tumultuous one. It began in January 2025, when Trump announced he would impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports using emergency powers invoked over undocumented immigration and drug trafficking.

The move was met with outrage from Canadians, who responded with retaliatory measures worth $29.8 billion Canadian dollars ($20.7 billion) on U.S. imports. However, tensions were temporarily cooled when Trump agreed to a 30-day pause and limited tariffs on Canadian imports in March 2025.

The trade war continued throughout the year, with Trump imposing new tariffs worldwide and Canada matching the USMCA-compliant vehicles imported from the U.S. with a tariff of its own.

However, in November 2025, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump overstepped his authority by invoking emergency powers to impose tariffs, striking them down. Trump quickly enacted a temporary 10% global levy using a different law.

The trade war continued into 2026, with Trump threatening an even steeper tariff on Canadian goods in July and imposing a 50% tariff on many Canadian products, including those previously protected under the USMCA. The tariffs tax about 5% of what Canada ships to the United States every year.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney promised to match the new tariffs 'dollar for dollar' with retaliatory measures taking effect September 8. The trade war continues to strain the relationship between the two countries, causing uncertainty for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border.
