Trump's Trade War with Canada Enters New Phase as Tariffs Reach 50%

President Donald Trump's trade war with Canada has been escalating over the past year, with the US imposing steep tariffs on Canadian goods and threatening even higher levies. The conflict began in January 2025 when Trump announced his intention to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Canada, citing national security concerns. However, the move was met with resistance from the Canadian government, which promised retaliatory measures.

As tensions continued to rise, Trump's administration imposed a series of new tariffs on Canadian goods, including steel and aluminum. The Canadian government responded by imposing its own tariffs, worth $29.8 billion Canadian dollars ($20.7 billion), on US imports. The US also imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports in July 2025.

The trade war has had significant consequences for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border. Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to match any new tariffs imposed by Trump, saying 'we will do what is necessary to protect our economy.' The US Supreme Court ruled in February 2026 that Trump's use of emergency powers to impose tariffs was unconstitutional, but the decision did not immediately end the trade war.

The latest development came when Trump threatened to impose even steeper tariffs on Canada, claiming that the country discriminates against US goods. The new tariffs kicked in on August 22, taxing about 5% of what Canada ships to the US every year.
