TSX Closes Week with Losses Amidst Investment Summit and Interest Rate Speculation
The TSX composite index closed lower on Friday, capping off a week of losses for Canada's main stock market. The S&P/TSX composite index fell by 67.61 points to 35,806.65. According to John Zechner, chairman and lead equity manager at J. Zechner Associates, markets are 'grinding their way higher' despite several headwinds, including higher borrowing costs in the U.S. and concerns about AI spending.
The week's events included Prime Minister Mark Carney's two-day investment summit in Toronto, which saw multi-billion-dollar funding announcements aimed at attracting $1 trillion in total investment to Canada over five years. Zechner described the summit as 'fairly successful.' The prime minister also announced a 'productivity mega deduction' tax credit during the event.
Statistics Canada released inflation figures for August, showing the consumer price index held steady at three per cent. This led Zechner to believe that the Bank of Canada is less likely to raise interest rates in response to the latest numbers.
