TSX Composite Index Surges to New Highs Despite Gold Price Slide
The TSX Composite Index has been on a tear this year, surging by 14.35% and reaching new highs despite gold prices falling into a bear market. BlackBerry's stock jumped 138%, making it the index's top performer after pivoting to the artificial intelligence industry.
Other companies like Bird Construction have seen significant gains of 134% as they develop data centers in Canada and other markets. The gold and silver sectors have also contributed to the index's rise, with Aya Gold & Silver stock rising by 88%. However, major banks including Scotiabank, Bank of Montreal (BMO), Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), and TD Bank will report their earnings later this month.
The TSX Composite Index reacted positively to last week's jobs numbers, which showed a surge in hiring in July. Canada added over 75k jobs, while the US lost 23,000 jobs, leading to a dip in unemployment rates to 6.4%, the lowest level in two years.
