TSX Falls Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty and Bank Earnings
Canada's main stock index, the S&P/TSX Composite Index, slipped on Thursday due to ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and the assessment of bank earnings. The TSX fell by 108.49 points, or 0.29%, to 36,705.18 at 10:43 a.m. ET.
The market's cautious tone was influenced by the Middle East conflict, with Qatar's prime minister visiting Tehran to pursue mediation efforts after the US and Iran exchanged recriminations over Washington's decision to target Iranian trade partners for sanctions.
Bank earnings reports were also on investors' minds. TD Bank gained 1% after exceeding Bay Street expectations for quarterly profit, while Royal Bank of Canada and CIBC delivered a quarterly profit beat but saw their shares fall 1.9% and 1.8%, respectively.
