The TSX Composite Index was nearly flat on Wednesday as investors weighed quarterly results from National Bank of Canada alongside ongoing trade tensions with the U.S.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index fell by 45.49 points, or 0.12 per cent, to 36,912.14 at 11:04 a.m. ET.

National Bank of Canada's shares slipped 4.6 per cent despite beating quarterly profit estimates.

The bank's results extend a run of stronger-than-expected earnings from fellow Big Banks, including Bank of Montreal and Bank of Nova Scotia.

Earnings in the financial sector were strong overall, with the broader sector up 0.4 per cent.

Energy shares gained 0.9 per cent despite oil prices falling to a two-week low on hopes that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen.
