TSX Holds Steady Amid Oil Price Plunge
Canada's TSX Composite Index remained largely unchanged on Monday despite oil prices plummeting over 3%. The energy sector, which is a significant contributor to the index, fell by 2.1% due to lower crude prices.
The main drag came from energy heavyweights, while investors rotated into financials and tech sectors, which rose by 0.9% and 1.1%, respectively. This helped offset weaker materials performance, where miners were affected by softer precious-metal prices.
Investors were also awaiting Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem's speech for clues on interest rates. Retail sales data later this week will provide another read on consumer spending amid lingering inflation concerns.
The TSX can appear calm despite significant movements in individual sectors, making it essential to look beyond the headline index numbers.
