TSX Slips on Mining Losses Despite Cooler US Inflation
Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index slipped 0.3% after First Quantum, a major mining company, saw its stock plummet by 31% on news out of Panama.
The index was dragged down by the decision from Panama's government to recommend an orderly closure of First Quantum's Cobre Panama mine, a significant asset for the company.
This move had a disproportionate impact on the TSX due to its heavy weighting towards mining and energy companies, which are more susceptible to commodity price fluctuations and regulatory shocks.
The US market, on the other hand, benefited from softer-than-expected US inflation data, which lowered expectations for additional Federal Reserve rate hikes and boosted high-growth sectors like tech.
