TSX Slumps 584 Points Amid Rising Yields and Falling Gold Prices
The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) closed at around 35,751 on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, after a significant decline of about 584 points, or roughly 1.6%, from Tuesday's close of 36,335.61.
This drop more than erased the 326-point gain from Tuesday, when the TSX closed at an over two-week high, and left the index slightly below last Friday's close.
The decline was largely driven by losses in banks and precious-metal miners, with Canada's biggest banks - Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank, CIBC, Bank of Montreal, and Bank of Nova Scotia - all falling between 1.7% to 2.8%, according to Trading Economics component data.
Gold miners such as Agnico Eagle, Barrick, Wheaton Precious Metals, and Franco-Nevada also gave back Tuesday's gains, with Endeavour Silver plummeting around 8% after CIBC downgraded the stock to 'neutral' from 'outperformer'. However, energy provided some support as oil prices rebounded, with Suncor Energy rising about 1.9%.
