Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda acknowledged that Japan’s inflation rate has hit the central bank’s 2% target but cautioned that its duration remains uncertain. Speaking at the International Monetary Fund in Washington on Friday, Ueda emphasized that underlying inflation is currently at the desired level, suggesting a state of equilibrium. However, he expressed uncertainty about whether this stability could be maintained over the long term.

During a question-and-answer session following his speech, Ueda stated, "Underlying inflation is 2%, our goal is to keep it there." He added, "I think we are in equilibrium." Despite this positive outlook, he noted that the sustainability of this equilibrium is still unknown.

The governor’s remarks highlight the Bank of Japan’s cautious approach to monetary policy, as policymakers remain vigilant about ensuring that inflation expectations become firmly anchored among the public. The uncertainty surrounding the longevity of the 2% inflation rate underscores the challenges of sustaining economic stability in Japan.
