Ueda's Hawkish Remarks Strengthen Yen Amid BoJ Rate Hikes
BOJ Governor Ueda's recent statements have strengthened the yen, causing it to trim its earlier losses. In a press conference following the BOJ's decision to hike rates, Ueda emphasized that Japan's economy is experiencing moderate growth and core inflation is gradually approaching the 2% target.
However, he warned of a risk of exceeding this target due to more aggressive price and wage increases by companies, which necessitates vigilance and justifies further rate hikes. The BOJ will consistently continue its monetary tightening cycle, adjusting the degree of easing based on economic and price indicators.
Ueda also signaled that potential resistance from dissenting board members will not stop the Bank of Japan from executing its plan. This hawkish stance was interpreted by the market as a clear signal that further rate hikes are inevitable, causing the USDJPY exchange rate to slide below 157 levels and the 38.2 retracement of the last downward wave.
