UK Economic Outlook Dims as Inflation Rises and Growth Slows
The UK's economic situation is becoming increasingly complex as inflation remains a primary concern for the Bank of England. The latest data shows that UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation for August 2026 rose to 3.1%, up from 2.9% in July, driven by higher energy prices.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has upgraded the UK's economic growth forecast for 2026 to 1.1%, but downgraded growth to 1% for 2027. The OECD also forecasts that UK consumer price inflation will take longer than expected to fall back to target levels in 2027, hitting 2.6%.
The market is pricing in a higher probability of future rate hikes, with the surge in UK 10-year gilt yields above 5.3%. This reflects investors demanding greater compensation for holding government debt amidst inflation concerns.
