UK Economy Faces Weak Growth Amid Fiscal Constraints and Rising Energy Costs
The UK's economic outlook is facing significant challenges as the government's fiscal position becomes increasingly constrained. According to Oxford Economics, the country's GDP growth will remain weak over the next two years, with a forecast of 1.2% in 2026 and 1.8% in 2028.
Matthew Swannell, Associate Director at Oxford Economics, highlighted three key factors shaping the UK's economic outlook: the government's constrained fiscal position, persistently high interest rates, and mounting pressure on households and businesses.
The government's public finances are under increasing pressure due to higher borrowing costs, which have increased the cost of servicing government debt by £70 billion annually. This represents a substantial fiscal constraint, equivalent to approximately 20% of total income tax receipts.
