UK Economy in Turmoil as Diesel Costs Soar Amid Global Uncertainty
The UK economy is facing unprecedented challenges as diesel costs surge to a record high of 199.18p per litre, while borrowing costs also increase ahead of the upcoming Budget.
The recent jump in diesel prices reflects the UK's exposure to global events, with Brent crude oil prices rising above $96 per barrel after a four percent increase on Monday morning.
Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, warned that 'UK fuel costs have now entered uncharted territory' and raised concerns about the economic impact and the Bank of England's response.
The two-year gilt yield rose six basis points to 4.75 percent as Chancellor John Healey delivered his keynote address at the Labour party conference, while the 10-year gilt yield increased five basis points to 5.4 percent, nearing a 19-year high.
